In my classroom this month, we have finished our unit of industrial revolution. My students worked together in groups of two to create a rural city in England without knowing there would be twenty rounds of adding homes, factories, railroads, tenements, and more. Most could barely fit anything on their paper when reaching the last round. I used this assignment to show them how difficult trying to squeeze everyone into these fast growing cities was during the industrial revolution and urbanization period. My students loved this assignment, were able to learn more about urbanization, and built social skills by dividing up work with their partner.
