8th grade students in Ms Brittany Adams class recently took the lead in an engaging, inquiry-based lesson exploring the growing tensions in the United States between 1840–1860. Working in small groups, students analyzed primary and secondary sources to investigate how economic, social, ideological, and political changes contributed to division between the North and South. They collaborated to discuss evidence, draw conclusions, and teach their peers through station activities. Students then extended their learning by examining reform movements such as abolition and women’s rights, including the significance of the Seneca Falls Convention. Through thoughtful discussion and analysis, students demonstrated strong critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of how differing perspectives and beliefs helped shape the road to the Civil War.
