Project Citizen

Our Project Citizen club members in grades 6–8 recently traded their policy binders for art supplies to spread some cheer at our local nursing home. By hand-crafting personalized cards, these middle schoolers moved beyond the classroom to practice civic duty in its purest form: recognizing and honoring the members of our community who are often overlooked. This service project challenged students to step outside their own social circles and practice empathy, fostering a deep sense of kindness and social responsibility. As they debated the perfect message to brighten a senior’s day, they weren’t just making crafts—they were embodying good citizenship and learning that active participation in society starts with the simple, powerful act of thinking of others.

Beyond the immediate joy these cards will bring, this initiative serves as a bridge between generations, reminding our students that they are part of a community much larger than themselves. By engaging in this outreach opportunity, our Project Citizen members are discovering that leadership isn’t just about understanding laws; it’s about the moral courage to act when a neighbor is in need. These young advocates are learning that civic engagement is a lifelong commitment to the common good, proving that even the smallest gesture can have a profound impact on our community. Seeing our 6th-8th graders embrace this mission with such sincerity gives us great confidence in the future of our local community and the compassionate leaders they are becoming.
